Sex/Gender: Female
Actual Age/Apparent Age: 17, but this will change the day after she arrives.
Belongings: Her frying pan!
Skills and Powers: Rapunzel's hair is very special, and has the power to actually reverse age and heal any and all injuries, and does seem to have the ability to bring individuals back from the dead. She’s had her power since birth - her mother had fallen deathly ill and a special little plant that stemmed from a single drop of sunlight was the only thing to save her. This is how Rapunzel acquired her 'powers'. However, her hair can never be cut, otherwise it will turn into ordinary hair.
It also seems to have some sort of super strength and prehensile abilities -- she's able to use it like a whip and maneuver it almost like a monkey can its tail, and where as normal hair would likely break off and be...not that pretty, it's perfect and all the same length. It's also either...super light or her neck is buff because that
is a lot of hair. Book Description: The outside of the book is gold, with amethysts, emeralds, and rubies encrusting the cover. Kind of like
this, but without Jesus.
History and Personality: We all know how the Rapunzel story goes, right?
"Rapunzel, Rapunzel - let down your hair!" And so she does, the valiant prince climbs up and whisks her away and marries her and they have babies and life is great (ignore the horrible subplot of said prince getting blinded by thorns and a pregnant heroine cast into the woods by herself, this is Disney here). Right?
Wrong.
Rapunzel was kidnapped when she was just a baby by Mother Gothel for far more sinister purposes than just an old lady wanting a baby to love. In our story Rapunzel's hair is not only incredibly long, but it's also very special and contains the power of the sun, and the ability to actually reverse age and heal, which makes her quite the prize. Initially Gothel attempted to cut Rapunzel's hair so that she could use it, but quickly found out that if cut, the hair loses its magic. So kidnapping was
obviously the way to go.
Gothel took the girl and raised her as her own, and as a precaution fed her stories about the horrible things out in the real world, manipulating Rapunzel into believing that her 'mother' only wanted to protect her and keep her safe. She had no idea she was being used solely for her unique abilities, and for years Rapunzel led a very secluded, solitary and lonely life with only her mother (on occasion) and a chameleon named Pascal. Each year (coincidentally enough!) on her birthday, the kingdom sends floating lanterns into the sky in memory of their lost princess, and Rapunzel watches from her tower, longing to see the source.
This fear of the unknown instilled by her mother doesn't prevent Rapunzel from longing to see the floating lanterns, but it does keep her from ever leaving the tower.
In turn, Rapunzel is quite the invalid but possesses certain qualities stereotypical of Disney princesses: naive, sweet, compassionate, kind, caring.. Her actions denote these qualities -- her sincerity in her love and trust and loyalty to her mother, and one of her most predominate traits is her loyalty to the mother that has kept her captive. Despite her eventual (and arguably inevitable) escape, Rapunzel does love Mother Gothel, and defaults to her 'wisdom' more often than not. She knows very little of the outside world because of this captivity, and has learned very few life lessons in general.
However, this captivity isn't without its perks. Rapunzel is Incredibly intelligent for a girl so secluded, and has mapped star charts and patterns along with teaching herself how to paint. She is also incredibly well read and an exceptional baker. With nothing else to do in her spare time, Rapunzel has become quite the multi-talented individual. She knits, sews, plays guitar, cooks, reads, does ballet, plays chess, makes candles, practices ventriloquism, paints, does paper mache, plays darts, and is quite the potter. She has thrown herself into her education and talents, though despite being so well read, Rapunzel still retains her innocence and the lack of social interaction leaves her an inherently curious creature, full of questions and curious ponderings.
and what the girl believes to be a great need to protect her hair from those that would misuse it. She’s been hiding from people that would abuse it her entire life, though she unknowingly has been used in this very way since her birth and subsequent kidnapping.
A few days before Rapunzel's 18th birthday, Rapunzel gathers the courage to ask Gothel if they could go see the lights, but Gothel becomes angry and rejects the request, filling the girls head with more stories of the horrible things awaiting her were she to leave. Mother knows best, and all that. Gothel leaves, and Rapunzel is left feeling very depressed - at least, until a manhappens upon her tower.
Flynn Rider is exactly the kind of guy parents don't want their daughter dating - cocky, self assured, attractive and a thief, he stumbles upon the girl's tower and climbs the tower in an attempt to hide from the guards that were in hot pursuit - he'd stolen the lost princess's tiara. Instead of being able to hide quietly, he's held captive by the girl, and she bargains with him, frying pan brandished. He's rendered unconscious and Rapunzel hides his loot. She's a determined young woman, and despite her loyalty and obedience to her mother, she insists on this freedom she can obtain with Flynn's aid, if he will assist. Unable to tolerate any longer being cooped up in a tower, Rapunzel uses a subtle manipulation --the hidden loot, and a promise to return it to him if he takes her to the lanterns and brings her home -- to coerce Flynn into helping her. And, because of her relative naivety, she mostly ignores plots and schemes by Flynn to deter her (and woo her).
Upon being released from her tower, Rapunzel is immediately elated and conflicted at the same time, unable to decide if she's happy about the events or absolutely terrified of the consequences. The feel of the grass beneath her feet, the water on her legs, sand between her toes are experiences that give her reason to sing (literally) with joy, but also harbor an incredible amount of guilt for 'betraying' her mother.
Eventually, she decides to continue with the journey (after some warring and rather vocal debating with herself). She knows that seeing these lanterns is important and nothing will stop her from her goal -- even when taken into a seedy pub with viking-esque individuals, Rapunzel simply befriends them and never loses her determination. Rapunzel is an inherently good individual, and people seem to sense that -- even murderous vikings with hooks instead of hands. She's incredibly non-judgmental, and this is obviously portrayed by her acceptance (albeit initially hesitance) of these 'ruffians' and 'thugs' -- she wants to believe there is good in people and in general. She's very accepting of people and their flaws, and while she may be initially...startled, she warms over and accepts nearly everyone for who they truly are, and tends to bring out the best in individuals. A lot of this is likely due to the fact that she has been so isolated and has not had the chance to formulate stereotypes and preconceived judgments against any one group of people. Except maybe ruffians and thugs -- though that's...quickly overcome.
Of course, she isn't without fear. Despite her ability to bring out good in others and warm over and...well. Believe a lot of what she's told, she is still very apprehensive about the world outside of her tower. Her first reaction when meeting someone new - Flynn -- is suspicion and fear. She automatically assumes he is there to kidnap her, cut her hair, or something else equally unsavory.
She’s insistent about her desire to complete her task, and it’s that drive that pushes her and Flynn both along their paths. She doesn’t take no for an answer, and has no problem brandishing a frying pan and whalloping someone (namely Flynn) a good one if she feels threatened.
Eventually, curiosity and determination win out, and they make their way towards the castle -- but instead, she ends up in the Library.
Physical Description: Rapunzel is small and lithe with hair that is over 70 feet long. Her eyes are a bright green and she has a very innocent face that’s soft and rounded as opposed to the well defined and sharp lines of her ‘mothers’ face. She stands maybe 5’2’’ and clocks in around 115 pounds soaking wet. It’s shown in movie that she climbs and exercises, so she’s in fairly good shape for someone who’s been cooped up their entire life. She wears dresses in accordance with the time frame she is from; peasant gowns with lightly puffed princess sleeves.
World Description: Rapunzel appears to live in a world that correlates to possibly sometime in the 1600s. That assumption is based off the fact that she has named her chameleon Pascal, and therefore has some sort of knowledge about Blaise Pascal and some of his writings.
Since this is an...AU of the 17th century and there doesn't appear to be rampant poverty in Corona (the actual name of the city), and seeing as this is a Disney movie, it's probably safe to assume that
for the most part, things are going well. The king and queen are kind but just, and there is no real want for food, water, clothing, textiles, etc.
There are obvious classes when one looks at the citizens of the city and their dress and the things they hold, but everyone seems to be content and no one appears to be impoverished.
It's...Disney. Things are pretty good, FOR EVERYONE EVER and they all get their happily ever after. Eventually.
Except Mother Gothel.
SamplesFirst Person/Action brackets: [
It...took Rapunzel some time to figure out how to work the bookmark, hands trembling so much that she'd dropped it several times before she'd even managed to get a good look
at it.
When her message comes through, her voice is shaky and her eyes are glistening slightly.]
I--I need to know where I
really am, what's going on.
Please. It's...it's
really important that I go home right away. [
A shuddering breath.]
F-Flynn? Are you here?
...
Oh my gosh, Mother is going to kill me...Third Person/Prose: She comes to groggily, hand lifting to rub at her face as she tries to clear her eyes of sleep and fog. The book in her hand is heavy, gold laden, and she looks at it in sleepy confusing, wondering where her mother had gotten it from, and when.
Then she sits bolt upright, eyes wide and sleep gone, staring wildly around the unfamiliar room with a soft little whimper. This wasn't her tower, and more importantly, it wasn't the
outside world.Rapunzel didn't remember falling asleep.
No, she
distinctly remembered sliding down her hair and just barely touching the tip of a toe to the grass beneath her, inhaling the sweet summer breeze and feeling the warmth of the sun on her face. The room she was in now, though, was nowhere close to being outside, and it was considerably cooler -- and much more foreboding than even the woods just outside the tower seemed to be.
The book clatters to the floor unnoticed as she shoots to her feet, stumbling over her hair that has become twisted around her and she crashes into the table with a soft scream, nearly upsetting it and its contents both.
"Wha--what--" She swallows, trying to find her voice as she straightens, whirling around eyes still wild and unfocused. "Where am I? What is this? What's going on?!"
The little recording clicks on, and she stares on blankly, listening with growing horror.
She was gone -- away from Flynn, away from Mother -- away from
everything.
And it was
all her fault.
